College testing is typically the "gateway" to the college application process. Junior year is the best time to begin testing. Sometimes, however, there are exceptions. Some students find that spring during their sophomore year is their best time for the testing window, while others may be taking one final test fall of senior year. When considering the best time to take the SAT or ACT, consider the following:
-Have the basics of Math through Trigonometry been taken which covers all concepts on the tests?
-What time of the year is the busiest in the schedule? (You'll want to plan around those seasons)
-When are my semester exams and my AP Exams? (Ideally you don't want to overlap these.)
Many schools are score optional, which means you do NOT have to submit scores as part of your application. Some schools no longer accept scores at all, while others have reverted back to requiring test scores when applying. As you decide whether or not you should take these tests, start by researching the schools you are interested in to determine if test scores are necessary. If the schools you are applying to are score optional and you are a strong test taker, it may be to your advantage to take the SAT or ACT. If tests like these are challenging for you, you may decide to opt out of this step. Either way, make the decision that is best for you! My biggest piece of advice during the steps to the college testing and application process is "NO REGRETS!" Make the decision that is best for you and be sure you have no regrets once the process is over.
